Hijama & Ayurveda Treatment in Kerala - Integrated Healing at Tigris Valley

Hijama, or cupping therapy, is a prophetic and traditional healing method used to remove toxins, improve circulation, and relieve physical and emotional stress. Practiced for centuries across the Middle East and Asia, Tigris Valley brings this powerful therapy into a modern wellness context. Small suction cups are placed on specific points to stimulate blood flow and draw out impurities. What sets Hijama apart is its ability to purify the blood and rejuvenate the body holistically from within.

What is Hijama at Tigris Valley?

Hijama - known across the Arab world as الحجامة - is one of the oldest and most widely respected therapeutic practices in Islamic medicine. At Tigris Valley, this prophetic healing tradition is not offered in isolation. It is integrated into a broader clinical framework that draws from Ayurveda, Unani medicine, and functional wellness - creating a depth of treatment that addresses the body as a whole, not just the presenting symptom.
Our approach to hijama treatment in Kerala is rooted in three principles: clinical safety, therapeutic authenticity, and genuine personalisation. Every guest receives a full health assessment before any treatment begins. The cupping protocol is then designed around your individual constitution, health history, and therapeutic goals.
Tigris Valley is a NABH-accredited wellness centre with over 40 years of combined healing wisdom. Guests from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and across the world choose us not only for the quality of our treatments, but for an environment that genuinely respects their culture, their faith, and their need for real results.

How We Practise Hijama Cupping Therapy

Every hijama cupping therapy session at Tigris Valley is carried out under the direct supervision of qualified AYUSH-registered doctors. We do not offer cupping as a standalone spa service. It is a medically supervised therapeutic procedure, performed with the same standards of hygiene, safety, and clinical oversight that govern all treatments at our centre.
Types of Hijama Offered

The classical prophetic method. Small suction cups are placed on specific therapeutic points on the body. Superficial incisions are made, and the cups draw out stagnant or impure blood. This is the most therapeutically potent form of Hijama and is performed strictly by our qualified doctors. Sessions are offered on the Sunnah-recommended lunar calendar days (17th, 19th, and 21st of the Islamic month) for guests who wish to observe this tradition.

Suction cups are applied without incisions. This method stimulates circulation, releases deep muscle tension, improves lymphatic drainage, and is well-suited for guests new to cupping therapy or those with conditions where wet cupping is not yet indicated. It is also used as a preparatory or follow-up step alongside wet cupping sessions.

Cups are moved across the body in a gliding technique to mobilise the fascia, release chronic muscular tension, and enhance blood and lymphatic flow across a broader area. Particularly effective for back pain, shoulder stiffness, and post-exertion recovery.
Safety and Hygiene Standards
  • All equipment used in wet cupping is single-use, sterile, and disposable - discarded immediately following each session
  • Pre-session health screening is conducted for every guest before wet cupping begins
  • Post-session rest and monitoring is built into the treatment schedule
  • All procedures are performed in private, climate-controlled treatment rooms
  • No session proceeds without a doctor's assessment and written protocol

Unani Medicine Alongside Hijama

The Islamic Medicine Tradition - Practised in Full
Hijama and Unani medicine share the same philosophical foundation. Both emerge from the humoral medicine tradition - the understanding that health depends on the balance of the body's four fundamental humours: blood (dam), phlegm (balgham), yellow bile (safra), and black bile (sauda). When this balance is disturbed, disease follows. When it is restored, the body heals.
Unani medicine - الطب اليوناني الإسلامي was preserved, systematised, and expanded by Islamic scholars including Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ibn Rushd (Averroes), and Al-Razi. It remains one of the most complete systems of natural medicine in the world, and at Tigris Valley, it is practised by physicians with deep clinical training in its classical principles.
How Unani and Hijama Work Together at Tigris Valley
Our Unani physicians assess each guest's dominant temperament - their Mizaj (المزاج) - at the start of the programme. This assessment determines:
  • Which cupping points are most therapeutically relevant for your specific constitution
  • Which herbal formulations (joshanda, itrifal, ma'jun) should be prescribed before and after Hijama to support detoxification and restoration
  • Which regimenal therapies - Ilaj bil Tadbeer - including steam baths, dietary corrections, and guided rest, should accompany the cupping sessions
  • The pacing and sequencing of Hijama sessions within your overall programme
The combination of Hijama and herbal medicine in this integrated way is rare outside of specialist Islamic medicine centres. At Tigris Valley, it is standard practice.

Conditions Addressed Through Hijama

Hijama treatment in Kerala at Tigris Valley is used as part of personalised therapeutic programmes for a range of conditions. A full medical assessment confirms whether Hijama is appropriate for your specific situation and how it will be integrated with other treatments in your programme.
Chronic Pain and Musculoskeletal Conditions
Back pain, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, frozen shoulder, joint inflammation, fibromyalgia, and tension headaches or migraines. Hijama improves local circulation and reduces inflammatory load in affected areas, often providing relief that other therapies have not achieved.
Detoxification and Blood Purification
Heavy metal toxicity, post-medication cleansing, blood stagnation, sluggish lymphatic function, and general toxic overload. Wet cupping is one of the most direct methods of removing metabolic waste and impure blood from the body's tissues.
Cardiovascular and Circulatory Health
Hypertension (high blood pressure), poor peripheral circulation, elevated blood viscosity, and cholesterol management. Hijama has a documented history of use in cardiovascular support within Islamic medicine, and our doctors integrate it carefully within a broader cardiac wellness protocol.
Skin Conditions
Chronic eczema, psoriasis, acne, and inflammatory skin disorders. Detoxification through Hijama, combined with Ayurvedic herbal treatment, addresses the internal triggers that manifest on the skin.
Immune and Respiratory Health
Recurring infections, chronic sinusitis, low immunity, post-COVID fatigue, and immune dysregulation. Hijama supports immune modulation and clears the channels through which the body's natural defences operate.
Metabolic and Hormonal Conditions
Type 2 diabetes management, obesity, hormonal imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal fatigue. Hijama is used alongside dietary therapy and Unani herbal protocols to support metabolic restoration.
Stress, Fatigue, and Mental Clarity
Chronic stress, burnout, sleep disorders, anxiety, and cognitive fog. The parasympathetic activation that follows Hijama, combined with Ayurvedic therapies such as Shirodhara, creates conditions for deep nervous system restoration.
All treatment decisions are made by our qualified medical team following a thorough assessment on Day 1 of your programme. Hijama is never administered as a routine service without clinical review.

The session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. After a thorough skin cleansing, suction cups are applied to specific therapeutic points. Small superficial incisions are made, and the cups draw out stagnant blood. Most guests experience mild pressure and warmth. Post-session rest is built into the schedule. The experience is private, calm, and professionally managed throughout.

This is determined by your medical assessment and programme duration. As a general guide: the 7-day programme includes 2 to 3 sessions; the 14-day programme 4 to 5 sessions; the 21-day programme 6 to 8 sessions. Sessions are appropriately spaced to allow the body to respond and recover between treatments.
